Pursuing an online degree program makes sense for today’s busy, jet set citizens of the world. It always seems like there’s something new to do, and that’s not the way we like to run our own lives. However, it is what it is, and you have to learn to work within the constraints of the life you have in order to get the life that you want. So what’s a person to do when they really want to get an online degree? Change their study habits, of course.
Indeed, you’re going to need to change your study habits to make absolutely sure that you will be able to keep up with the online class. You might not realize this at first, but the online world moves a lot faster than a traditional classroom. The teacher will assume that you have the resources to research for more information, so they aren’t going to spend as much time teaching you things. You either know the information or you don’t — there’s really no in-between about it. If you’re going to an online college that has some offline support centers, you might take advantage of that. Otherwise, you’re going to have to get at looking up your own information.
There are information portals online where online students can team up to learn new things. We definitely recommend setting out for these centers as soon as you can. It’s better to make sure that you have the power to really make sure that you’re going to be able to keep up in the class before you even enroll. Failing out of an online class can slow down your entire online degree program, costing you a lot of money in the process. If there’s only one teacher teaching the course you might come to the point where the teacher doesn’t even want to mess with having you back in the class if you’re not going to follow along and commit to the course as designed.
Speaking of the course structure be prepared for discussions. Discussions are something that you need to “study” for in the sense that you need to make sure that you find something to contribute to the conversation. The last time we took online classes, discussions actually counted for a major part of our grade. It was to the point where it cost us a letter grade simply because we didn’t participate in the discussions. It can take a lot of time out of your day to even think about the discussions, and it’s something that a lot of online students don’t really think about. They assume that the discussions don’t matter, so they skip them. Unfortunately, these discussions do indeed matter. It’s a good way for the teacher to really see who is paying attention and who isn’t. Don’t think that you can just pop in, spit out a response and run off. You’re going to need to answer things that others have asked and really make it look like you’re truly following along. They call it a discussion for a reason, you know!
When we say that you need to study, we’re not kidding either — if you’re not studying at least 1.5 hours for every hour of class time, you are running the risk of being left behind as the class moves forward. You will need to make sure that you truly understand the material — you’re being given more time to use all of your resources, so that’s what we suggest that you do.
The last thing that you want to do is take this lightly. Your teacher will be watching your progress, and if you’re on any type of financial aid, getting kicked out of a class can jeopardize your online course offerings. The best thing that you can do is just try to make sure that you really take the time to get serious about your classes in every way, shape and form.
Think about it — aren’t you working hard towards something? Just because it’s an online classroom doesn’t mean that it’s time to goof off and just try to skate by. Teachers aren’t going to put up with that either. So if you’re ready to work hard, it’s a good time to pursue an online degree program — study well!
